Philadelphia is the center of economic activity in Pennsylvania and is home to the Philadelphia Stock Exchange and several Fortune 500 companies. Boasting the seventh-largest metropolitan economy in the United States, it also ranks ninth among world cities and fourth in the nation. The city is also the nation’s fourth-largest consumer media market. It has shifted its economy to information technology and service-based economy. Add to this wealth the sliding fortunes of the people of Philly, and it’s no wonder many believe you can buy off the cities problems. Revitalization and gentrification of neighborhoods began in the late 1970s and continues to this day… with varying degrees of success.
